Something Unexpected

My day didn't start out with this intention. I was going to look really cute today, with my favorite sequin heels from J.Crew, my favorite Anthro top, and a Day One blowout.

And then it rained.

And then it poured

And on came the Nike hoodie.

You know those things that are your favorite things? The things that go with you on every trip, the things that you freak out when you can't find them? This Nike hoodie is one of those things.

So are the sequin heels, to be honest, which is why they were swapped for a pair of leather Aldo pumps (and I love them too, but sometimes we have to make hard choices).

Sometimes the best ideas come out of necessity. Sometimes it's something unexpected. And sometimes it just works.

Favorite Things: Baby It's Cold Outside

I don't know what the weather looks like where you are, but Dallas is experiencing unseasonably low temperatures this week. And even though tomorrow is supposed to be back in the 50s, I can't get past the feeling of Christmas. What are your go-to winter weather items?

On Having a Uniform

This past weekend I texted a friend, "So, if you see me on a Saturday, I will be wearing those baggy boyfriend jeans, brown sandals and a white muscle tank top. I can't help it."

My entire high school career, I managed to avoid "the uniform." No plaid skirts, no white button-downs, no khakis, no polo shirts. I got to wear whatever I wanted, except for when I tried to pull off a Blink-182 concert t-shirt. I was told to go home and change.

I guess that's why I resisted the idea of having a go-to, a style uniform, for so long. I didn't want to be pigeonholed. I am woman, I can't be tamed, I can't be limited. I will wear what I want, when I want, where I want. I don't need no stinkin' uniform.

Except that we create our uniform styles without trying. It happens as naturally as breathing. We like grey t-shirts, we end up with a wardrobe full of them. We're drawn toward shiny objects, and poof - all of our jackets have embellishments on them. We like skinny jeans of a particular wash, we can't get away from Nike Runs, we favor long necklaces with charms, or collarbone-grazing pendants. And suddenly, a uniform is born.

A white t-shirt. Baggy jeans. Brown sandals. Layered necklaces. This is what I look like on Saturdays.

What does your go-to outfit look like?

Shopping My Closet: The Long Week

I woke up this morning to the sound of rain whipping at the window, flashes of lightning illuminating every corner of my bedroom and the bone-shaking sound of thunder rattling the windows.

When you were a kid, did you ever see the lightning flash, then count the seconds (Mississippi-style) to see how many miles away the storm was? Because I do that as an adult...

Anyway.

It's raining, it's 60 degrees, and I'm wearing a sweatshirt. What are you up to today?

Shopping My Closet: One of the Boys

I can't be the only one who has those days where I don't want anything clinging to my body. You know what it feels like: your hair is a day past dirty, you had a late night and you're guzzling coffee like caffeine is the very essence of your being, and if you have to wiggle into a pair of skinny jeans it will be the absolute end.

Just me? Okay.

I have been on the quest for the perfect boyfriend jeans. Ripped in all the right places, baggy, slouchy, room for giant cuffs at the ankles, low-slung but not low-rise...

I thought I had hit gold with this Gap pair, but they were just too nice and comfortable for me to truly destroy the way I needed to.

I had started thinking it was hopeless, but I went with a friend to Urban Outfitters, and found the holy grail of boyfriend jeans in the men's section. Levi's 508, light wash with some distressing already implemented - I was in heaven. I even added a few more rips and tears to get the perfect shredded look to them, and I have to stop myself from wearing them every single day.

Have you tried shopping in the men's section for jeans? What do you think of the new baggy, boyfriend look?

Shopping My Closet: Occasion Non-Specific

When I did the Great Closet Clean-Out of 2013 and wrote down my resolutions for 2014, I vowed to stop saving things.

I have heels in my closet, barely worn, pants that I deemed "too fancy" for daytime outings, jackets "too nice," shirts "too delicate" for everyday wear. But my purchases were justified - these things are for special occasions!

By shelving my precious items for special occasions, I was really giving myself an out for avoiding fashion risks and channeling the same boring, go-to t-shirt/sweater/jeans combination for my day-to-day. In 2014, that just doesn't cut it.

Then I read Refinery 29's 10 Commandments of Style, and found yet another voice championing me to re-wear the fancy pieces for not-so-fancy moments.

That, and I just really wanted to wear a fur jacket today, even with my Nike hoodie.

Shopping My Closet: C'mon, Get Warmer

I never really thought I'd end up being a "dog person," but Miss Murphy has me wrapped around her little paw. One of my dear friends knew in advance that I would melt into a puddle with our little puppy, and gifted me a French bulldog sweater for Christmas with the spitting image of the Murphster (@murphrus), pink bow and all.

It hasn't really gotten above freezing here yet, but doesn't this cute little love just warm your heart?

Shopping My Closet: Inclement Weather

Today, it's 75 degrees and sunny as all get-out, and I relished the chance to eat lunch outdoors. On Thursday, it'll be dipping into freezing temperatures and pouring rain. In the spirit of bracing myself for Texas' bipolar weather patterns, I'm planning ahead, all the way to Thursday.

The perfect way to combat wretched weather is with cozy, comfortable clothes that can make the stretch from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. without loss of enthusiasm. Come this rainy Thursday, I'll be wearing a warm flannel button-down, a waterproof trench coat, my favorite brown boots, a new pair of warm, textured pants from Hollister and a wide-brimmed fedora to keep my hair dry. That may be a prescription for hat hair all day, but hey, a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do...

Friday Favorites #6

Man, holiday weeks are the best. I can see turkey and football in my future, crashing into blissful nap time while doped up on stuffing, cranberry sauce and kugel.

I'm surprised my credit card company hasn't called to report suspicious charges on my account since I've been shopping in some very unexpected places lately. I decided a few weeks ago that I needed a pair of maroon/oxblood jeans to complete my fall wardrobe, and just like your keys (or those 10,000 spoons when all you need is a knife), it seems like searching for something is exactly what makes that something so impossible to find. I hit up all the usual suspects until, on a sheer whim, I walked into Hollister and found the holy grail of oxblood jeans. They are oh-my-gosh high rise, which I love, and even come in a 29" inseam so that they hit perfectly at the ankle.

Right now I'm trying to decide if I want to cut my hair back to just grazing my collarbones or if I'm happy with the current, just a little past my shoulder length. I love wearing it down and really undone, with barely-there waves and a little lift and grit, which is what this Bumble & Bumble texture cream does. To be honest, I've had this in my cabinet for almost a year, and hardly used it with my longer hair. Post-chop, all of my hair products just work a little bit better, and this one is now a must-have in my bag, even if I'm just gone for a day.

Ah, Nike Free, how I love thee... the go-with-everything flexibility of these sneakers cannot be overstated. I don't know how else to convince you - go get yourself a pair and then send me a thank-you note.

I'm also obsessed with super-long necklaces lately, and waited impatiently for this lariat necklace to come back in stock on BaubleBar. Even so, it won't ship until Dec. 3, but I'm convinced this will be worth the wait.

It's also beanie weather people, and I just want to put a hat on everything. These are like, $2 at Target, so you have no excuse. Put a beanie on it.

Continuing my obsession of all things gilded, this iPhone case from J.Crew is a fingerprint party, but I don't care. I love the glint of gold at the bottom of my purse... it makes it so much easier to find that bugger in the dark. Plus, it's a gold-tinted mirror for applying lipstick, mascara, what have you.

And last but not least, after weeks of rocking reds, deep purples and blacks on my fingernails, I think it's time for a holiday change-up, something along the lines of this color from Deborah Lippmann. Make your phalanges fancy.

Shopping My Closet: Weekending

As far as I'm concerned, Jenna Lyons can do no wrong. She made red lips cool for the masses, brought back geek-chic with her giant bifocal lenses in big black frames, and print-mixes like no one else I know. And while my budget isn't accommodating of the entire fall collection from J.Crew, I have turned to their famous Pinterest lookbook for more than one instance of style inspiration. I'll be honest, she just makes me want to dress better. So when it came to assembling this weekend's event wardrobe, I just had one question... What Would Jenna Lyons Wear?

Today's outfit is one that has to pull double-duty - a workday look for the 9-5 and something that transfers into an event and an after party.

Leather Pants
Leather Pants by jlrey
I picked up a pair of leather joggers at Urban Outfitters that were on sale and then some, and this is the first time I've worn them. Unfortunately they're sold out online, but here's a pair at Uniqlo for about the same price.

For sitting at a desk all day, I'm wearing Converse and a Korres lip butter in a really pretty Pomegranate shade, but for night I'll vamp up this look with a pair of lace-up heels and Revlon's lipstick in Really Red.

Saturday will be a day-long event, so I want to be as comfortable as possible, but that doesn't mean showing up in Adidas pants and sneakers, unfortunately. Instead of gym clothes, I've pulled a lightweight army green button down (excuse the corner of my cosmetic case in the photo) from Urban Outfitters, Madewell jeans, a striped tank, some of my favorite jewelry pieces and these ultra-comfortable TOMS desert wedges.

And now for the Jenna Lyons-esque finale: Saturday night will be officially print-mixed, featuring a navy & kelly-green striped shirt, a cool black motorcycle vest, leopard heels from Target, a pair of jeans from Hollister of all places, and a great necklace from J.Crew that I bought for my wedding.

So while I'm out partying away the weekend, search out your own style inspiration and make some daring choices. Happy weekending!

'Tis the Season to Don Beanies!

It happened. It wasn't intentional, but it happened. I listened to a Christmas song before Thanksgiving, and it felt so wrong, but so right all at the same time.

I got all pre-holidayed out, and went a little crazy looking for winter clothes, regardless of the fact that it's 70 degrees here and I feel uncomfortable in a sweater. What did I find? Beanies. And hats.

First off, here's a beanie with the entire arsenal of a Bedazzler from H&M.
Then, if bling ain't your thing, the Sailor Cap Beanie from Free People comes in tons of colors and is pure awesomeness.

Need ideas on how to rock a beanie? Check these out from my Accessorizing board

Structure seekers should get in on the wide-brim fedora trend, in a universal grey, also from Free People. I have one in navy and I wear it every fall/winter without fail.

Or give yourself a $10 treat with a leather baseball cap from Forever 21.

If you need further proof that baseball caps are cool, I direct you to J.Crew's version, below. There's a whole lot of cool in this picture. I mean, come on, Jenna Lyons knows cool.

And now that we're on the subject of baseball, I can get to my real point. The St. Louis Cardinals play in Game 6 of the World Series tonight, and if you feel like cheering on my team with me, you're not just relegated to the standard jeans and t-shirt.

Put on a pair of leather-coated skinny jeans, the requisite Cardinals t-shirt, an army jacket and metallic sneakers for a look that's a little luxe, a little "take me out to the ballgame."

Go Cards!

Go Cardinals

Shopping My Closet: Gimme Options

'Tis the season to wear jackets! Cover up your arms, uncover your toes and rock out with some tribal-inspired wear. Of course, you don't have to rush out and get these Kelsi Dagger heels if you're already wading through snowbanks, but all of this will look just as awesome with some ankle boots, lace-up heels, or full-out riding boots. You know what they say, just do you.

Dupe It Up

Unfortunately, I am not made of money. I'm sure this is quite a revelation, as you may have expected silver dollars to be flying off my fingers as I type, but the whole concept of "Shopping My Closet" came from a need to cut back on shopping expenditures and really evaluate how to wear what I already had at my disposal. That being said, the covetous urge rears its fashionable head pretty frequently. It's impossible to scroll through page after page of blogs and pins and not think, "Oh my goodness, I need that (insert shoe/sweater/pant/wide-brimmed wool fedora here) right this minute," as you whip out your credit card and, regardless of the current balance, start typing out the numbers that will send your closet to style heaven and everything else into a tailspin.

Personally, I have internal numbers that I just won't pass when it comes to purchasing so-called, "must-haves," and since none of those numbers match the rates on designer price tags, I started searching for carefully crafted duplicates, or items that were inspired by designer items I craved. I would be remiss if I didn't point you in the direction of my inspirations, Penny Chic and Penny Pincher Fashion. These girls have got it down.

Allow me to regale you with an instance in which Penny Pincher Fashion just about saved my life. For months, nay, years, I have been obsessed with lace-up sandals. The Altuzarra versions feature prominently on Man Repeller's blog, here, here and here, and on Pinterest, all over the dang place. My envy for these go-with-everything shields of awesomeness only grew with every photo I passed. The pictures below are all skirted examples, but these babies go with jeans, leather pants, white pants, dresses, tunics, your mom's bathrobe... everything. Ev-er-y-th-ing.

I was one click away from purchasing a pair of close-but-not-quite Zara heels that would have run me about $90 when I stumbled across this post from Penny Pincher Fashion.

The bells rang, the skies opened up with sunshine and the people rejoiced. Lace-up heels for under $50? I clicked buy and have worn them with everything, absolutely everything. Love is in the pre-holiday air, and it comes in the form of black lace-up heels.

Now go get your Monday on. Put on your boogie shoes!

Shopping My Closet: Wednesday's Trench Coat

When I said I was outfit planning for the week, I meant it. Most mornings I lay in bed avoiding the snooze button, scrolling through Pinterest until I figure out what I want to wear. But of course, it sometimes ends with me panicking at how much time I've wasted, piling on black and running out the door. Today I took a look from Monday's inspiration post, and recreated it for a cold, rainy Wednesday.

The inspiration:

And here's my take:

I'm wearing a trench coat from Gap, a striped sweatshirt from J.Crew, AE jeans and Madewell Bobbie Oxfords in black patent.

Shopping My Closet: Tuesday's Fall Layers

Spinning off of Monday's outfit planning post, today I shopped my closet for a good graphic tee, a shirt and coat to pile on layers for a pretty radical weather change. I wore an Atlas Shrugged t-shirt from Out of Print Clothing, a green utility shirt and black BDG jeans from Urban Outfitters, a navy utility jacket from the now-defunct Martin + Osa (gosh, I miss that store), and a pair of motorcycle boots from Calvin Klein, scored during a HauteLook sale.

Here's the inspiration:

And here's an example of how to get the look at home. Happy layering!

Shopping My Closet: Outfit Planning

I plan outfits like some people plan meals. Granted, someone's mandolining of fresh veggies into crunchable discs to be munched on all week long may generate a hearty hand-clap from nutrition nuts everywhere, but what are they wearing? #couldhavehadaV8

The heavens have finally opened up and drenched us with rain, bringing with it a beautiful cold front that will drop our collective temperature down 20 degrees over the course of the day tomorrow. In other words, it's time for LAYERS, people! What are you going to wear?

I submit, for your consideration, outfit inspiration for the rest of the week. Make it your own, make it functional. Pull out your favorite coat (leather, pea, trench, what have you), some sneakers, some brogues... scarves and sleeves, because it's fall, glorious fall.

Tuesday: T-shirt with a denim shirt, layered with a coat. Black jeans, black shoes, black bag... Sullen expression optional.

Wednesday: Sneakers, always a good idea. With newly-found leather joggers (more on that later)? Nobody can tell you no.

Thursday: Red lips and coffee not optional. It'll be Pre-Friday, so do what you want.

Friday: Lest you think I have an undiagnosed aversion to color, I give you this... Pick a color, any color. Pick your most exciting shoes. Pick a graphic t-shirt. Wear with aplomb.

Shopping My Closet: Foolproof

Some mornings just don't work out the way you want them to. When you wake up with zero time to get ready and a long To Do list ahead of you, it helps to have a foolproof outfit in your closet that you can slap on and feel confident bolting out the door in. For me, it's a go-to tank that can be layered with whatever jacket or office cardigan I have at my disposal, easy, ankle-length pants from H&M, and an easy pair of nude ballet flats picked up on major sale from Gap. With those pieces, I can have my hair in a topknot and swipe on a good lip color, and I'm ready to go from work to bridesmaid dress shopping, to dinner and finally back home at the end of a long day.

Trust me, I'm always running late.

Shopping My Closet: Who I Want to Be

One of the great things about being a woman is that there are so many options for getting dressed in the morning. Jeans, pants, ponte pants, distressed denim, wide-leg, skinny, boyfriend-style dress pants, skirts, minis, shorts, t-shirts, button-downs, cardigans, blouses, tanks... the list literally goes on. And on.

But with all of these choices at our disposal (depending on your closet style and proclivities for non-essential item storage, sequester pun intended) how in the world is it possible to stare into the depths of a walk-in and declare that the age-old problem has come to plague you; in short, how is it possible that you have nothing to wear?

I came across a quote by Caitlin Moran that sums up this feeling quite succinctly.

If we're being honest here, I don't remember what I wore on Monday. I could sit here and make something up for you, but it would be a false memory. I know precisely what I wore yesterday, because I can tell you precisely who I wanted to be yesterday. I wanted to be a slouchy college student again. I wanted to be comfortable, and I dressed to fit.

Lazy Tuesday
Lazy Tuesday by jlrey

A while back, I mentioned that during the whole "Shopping My Closet" experiment, there exists in my closet, a pair of Free People jeans that were purchased when I thought I was 5'10" and had big plans to wear heels all the time (full disclosure: I'm not 5'10", and heels make an appearance once a week on Sundays). I could say "wide leg," I could even say, "extreme wide leg," but unless you see it, you won't believe me.

These are real, I own them, but I did not pay sticker price for them (come on, now). And last night, I was determined to make these jeans work into a really cute, boho-hippie-chic outfit for today, but it didn't happen. One failed attempt at recreating a "sleep in it overnight and wake up with gorgeous hair in the morning" from Refinery29 (I don't blame you guys, really), and I spent 45 minutes getting my hair back to normal, leaving exactly two minutes to pull on a foolproof outfit and run out the door. So today, this is what I wore, because aggravation and disinterest is, of course, communicated best in black.
Black Wednesday
Black Wednesday by jlrey

Last night, inspired by my initial idea to pull off what was either going to be a really great or un-postable outfit (daring either way, kids), I tried out a black matte manicure. I bought a bottle of Essie's Matte About You back when the matte thing really became a trend, but literally never used it. But inspired by Pinterest (where else, really?), I think I like the matte black better than a glossy black. See for yourself.

So, let's chat. Who are you going to be today? Tomorrow? What are you wearing to make it happen?

Shopping My Closet: San Francisco

If you had the opportunity to go to one of your favorite places, but you had to leave in an hour, would you go? I would hope the answer is yes, and if it is, what would you pack?

Circumstances unfolded in the most beautiful way this past Tuesday, putting me on a plane to San Francisco at 7 pm that evening. We made the decision and bought the ticket at 3:30, and about three hours later, I was sitting on a plane. The 3.5 hours between decision and flight were eaten up by driving home from the office, packing, driving to the airport, getting through security and chugging a Caramel Macchiato. And then a surreal flight to a place with a 30-degree temperature difference, but back to packing.

Packing for a trip is usually something I spend a day or two on. I go on Polyvore and build outfits, then strategically pack everything neatly in my suitcase, leave it open at the foot of my staircase for a few hours or until the next day, adding and subtracting as needed. On Tuesday, I had zero time to accomplish any of that. I went off the ideas in my head, pulled a bunch of random items together, zipped it shut and ran out the door.

When you get the opportunity to do something spontaneous, how do you react? Do you shrink away because of the "what-ifs," or do you throw your favorite items into a carry-on and go make an experience out of it all? Me, I grabbed that spontaneous bull by the horns and rolled with it all the way to San Francisco.

Below is the amalgamation of items that made the carry-on cut for SF.
San Francisco
San Francisco by jlrey

Obviously, when you pack in a hurry, some things take up space but never make an appearance. Those cobalt blue pants, the embellished sweater, the AE jeans, the black Madewell shirt and the heels never even left the suitcase. The most clutch item packed? Those Nike sneakers. When you're walking all over the hills of San Francisco, you don't have time for barely-padded flats; you need traction.

Okay, I'm more than a little obsessed with the bridges there, but let's face it, who isn't?

Now go make a Friday out of this Monday.
